With the whole fashion industry shifting towards real beauty, Victoria’s Secret is the latest brand to join in. After years of creating an image of a fantasy world, the leading lingerie brand bids goodbye to its angels. The angels - a group of thin models who would participate in the annual VS show donning lingerie, decorative wings, and sky-high stilettos.

Previously VS was considered patriarchal and sexist, which must’ve worked for them then but was getting harmful now. Customers today are more aware and expect to resonate with the brand they shop from. Women want to define their shape, style, and comfort rather than relying on a brand’s image.

For many years, Victoria’s Secret generalized and encouraged a lean body type by strict restrictions on casting models above a certain weight and height. They also produced only a fixed range of sizes which excluded the bigger women. But today, they are rebranding their signature models for real women and are on a journey of becoming a leading advocate for women.

To make this shift, they launched the recently disclosed VS Collective. They will be collaborating with seven different sporty and activist women, including actor Priyanka Chopra, body advocate Paloma Elsesser, soccer player Megan Rapinoe, LGBTQ+ activist, and model Valentina Sampaio, and many more. All these members will work with the brand in creating an inclusive product range, inspiring content, and new programs. They also have a new board of directors consisting of 7 directors, 6 of which are independent women.

Although Victoria’s Secret joined the body positivity bandwagon quite late, all that matters is that they are finally here. They, too agree that they were slow to respond to the changing times and are putting efforts towards being accepted. Their opening the door for everyone irrespective of race, size, gender, and shape.
