COLOR BLOCKING

Updated: Nov 20, 2021

Color blocking is a trend that is everywhere, from Instagram to fashion shows. It is a combination of 2 or more solid colors together. The key concept is to combine different shades and hues. In the fashion world, color blocking means wearing blocks of colors. Pairing them together can make up for bold, eye-catching looks with attractive, complementary colors. A stylist needs to know the principles of color theory to pair colors that coordinate and contrast yet complement each other.

It was believed that this trend was seen in the 1900’s art, which was then incorporated in fashion by designers like Yves Saint Laurent in the ’60s. This trend resurfaced in interior designing in the 2010s and is now making a comeback in the fashion world with people experimenting with the color wheel.

Color blocking outfits stand out as they are different from what people usually wear, with the colors being loud and clashing. Although, the process of color blocking has some rules. One has to follow the ‘color wheel’ and pair colors next to each other to form the best color-blocking pair.

There are 3 different types of color blocking in fashion right now, namely -

1. Monochrome color blocking -

This involves the pairing of different shades and tints of one color. If the color gets too much, one can even pair up black and white for balancing it out.

2. Complementary color blocking -

This look is quite the opposite of the monochromatic look. It involves the combination of two opposite colors on the color wheel. These colors can be bright and can ruin the look, so one way to pair them is with a lighter shade of one color and a darker shade of the other. This way, one color will dominate the other and complement each other.

3. Tetradic Color Blocking -

Tetradic means the combination of 4 colors which gives one a balanced yet interesting look. Two-color pairs can be used for such a look, with one being dominant while the other being an accent. The use of tints and shades is often avoided in such a color block.
