In my earlier blogs, I have mentioned how I aspire to become a fashion stylist and the skills I will need for the same. I have a long way in learning and improvising on those, but there is always a beginning.
One of those skills I start with is ‘Material Knowledge,’ which is the knowledge of the currently available materials, characteristics, and sustainable qualities. It is essential for me to have basic knowledge regarding fabrics, color, texture, and pattern. When styling an outfit, it serves well to know the components of the fabric and its properties to experiment with how they will work on different silhouettes.
Recognizing fabrics by their look and texture is something I lack in. However, in the past few months, I spent time bettering myself in this particular area. I watched YouTube videos and read articles learning about the identification, properties, and applications of different fabric types. I also gained practical knowledge by accompanying my mother to the fabric shop, where I tested my learned ability and asked any queries I had. I can also say that I gained some experience in this when I was interning with a kids-wear fashion designer, who was patient to allow me to take my time and help me learn by correcting my mistakes.
I am looking forward to learning more and digging deeper to hopefully gain enough self-confidence and face the real world.
