MID-SIZE

For many years now, the fashion industry has been idealizing a small size. Everywhere we look, be it social media, celebrities, or magazines, we have normalized a size that is unfit and unnatural for many people. While doing so, we have unknowingly ended up demeaning any size bigger than that.

The fashion world today has two major sizing categories, i.e., petite size and plus size. Brands often post petite girls donning their outfits and have a separate section or page for plus size ranges. By doing so, it focuses on extreme categories.

Recently, I came across the term ‘mid size’ on Instagram. An Indian influencer named Aayushi Badheka started her page focusing on mid-size fashion and creating awareness. A vast group of consumers falls into this ‘in-between’ category. The average dress size is bigger than the petite sizing but smaller than the plus size. After seeing her content, I realized that I fall in the mid-size category and have faced many sizing issues because of brands not being inclusive. It is tricky to find the perfect mid-size clothes as some outfits of the same size might look great on you while some might be awful. Definitions for it may differ, but in my opinion, mid-size women fall under the 10-16 size category.

Mid-size is also majorly underrepresented, be it on fashion shows, editorial covers, or commercial shoots, due to which people fail to identify themselves as one. But this is changing, with more and more bloggers and influencers talking about it and pushing brands to be inclusive. Being a mid-size girl studying fashion, I was not aware of such a category existing until now, so I am doing my part to push it further and let girls know that it is important to love themselves and be healthy no matter their size.
