Fashion’s black-tie event, fashion’s biggest night out, the Met Gala 2021 took place recently. It is a fundraising benefit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art based in New York City. It gathers designers, Hollywood stars and models together to raise money for the costume institute as it is the only one of the Met’s departments that has to fund itself. It marks the opening of the Costume institute’s annual fashion exhibit and usually takes place on the first Monday in May. But due to covid the 2020 gala was cancelled and they suffered a huge financial blow. Which is why the 2021 gala ended up being a 2 part gala, With the second part to be held in May 2022.

Each year a theme is set as per that year’s costume exhibit and the guests are expected to style themselves up in accordance with the theme. The theme for this year’s exhibition was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” which was held on September 13th and did not disappoint. It showed the relevancy and power of the American Fashion. The guest list was 1/3rd of the usual but that did not lessen the extravaganza.

Each designer almost always come with their own celebrity dressed in their outfits being their walking advertisement. This brings out a competition as designers want the best stars and the stars want the most extraordinary outfits. This has made Met overcome any other red carpet when it comes to statement-making, eye-catching looks.

For this year’s Met, some stars chose to pay homage to national icons like Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly, while some shut down the red carpet stripping off layers, some donned political opinions while some portrayed a little of every American state in their outfits.

Although all the looks were excellent and showed America somehow or the other, my personal favorites included Kendall Jenner and Lil Nas X. Kendall donning a stunning Givenchy sheer dress embellished with rhinestones running over the shoulder spreading into the silhouette, paid homage to Audrey Hepburn. She topped her look with a diamond choker, minimal makeup, and a sleek bun.

Lil Nas X made his debut in a 3 part custom Versace outfit. His first layer had a golden cape with a flowing train, covered in gold beading. He removed the cape to reveal a golden armor suit, and on stripping further, he unveiled the final outfit, which included a shiny bodysuit. The golden-brown bodycon was covered in crystals and featured Versace’s home print.

Fitting outfits abiding by the theme is a difficult job. As a future stylist observing the works of renowned stylists proves as an inspiration and teaches the method of finding the perfect fit for every situation.
