Fashion is a popular aesthetic expression at a particular time and place. It is the prevailing style and the newest creations of designers. It is what is being offered and worn by most at any specific moment in time.
Fashion is the dominant style within a given culture at a particular time and has to do with new trends. It refers to popular ways of dressing during a specific era. On the other hand, style is an expression that lasts over many seasons and is often connected to cultural movements and social markers, symbols, class, and culture. In the fashion world, 'style' is usually shorthand for 'personal style,' or the way an individual expresses themselves through aesthetic choices such as their clothing, accessories, hairstyle, and how they put an outfit together. Personal style is about developing a sense of self rather than simply absorbing trends. It is unique and very personal. It has nothing to do with fashion.
Instead, it is an indication of one's persona. By cultivating their unique style, one has adopted the capability to be charismatic and confident.
Fashion is a collective term, whereas style relates to an individual. Fashion has to do with global trends and the business of fashion, while how an individual dresses and expresses themselves is their style. Fashion is timely; it fades while style is timeless and ethereal.
"Fashion is what you're offered four times a year by designers. And style is what you choose."
Therefore the above quote by Lauren Hutton, an American model and actress, tells us that even though our clothes are designed and manufactured by others, the style in which we wear or carry it is our personal choice.
The realms of fashion and style overlap. Although fashion and style sound similar, they are not. On my journey to become a fashion stylist, it helps to begin knowing that these terms are different.
