With covid being in 'fashion,' the face mask had to be the defining accessory of the year that was primarily worn for medical reasons but has gradually become a fashion accessory. It is a staple and essential item in one's wardrobe and is now generating income and jobs in the fashion industry, otherwise going through a downfall.
Unlike most fashion trends that cater to a targeted group of a specific gender or age, face masks are targeted towards people of all age groups and genders. Face masks are necessary, but they do not have to be boring and showcase one's creativity.
They are being made in multiple prints, colors, designs, and embellishments and have little trends like mask chains, mask scarfs, and hair ties. An Indian designer Sukanya Bhattachariya even said that masks are here to stay as a constant accessory in our life, so why not give them an aesthetic look. There are also luxurious designer masks available which are being added to the runway collections of various designers as part of their outfit looks.
The face masks also help in serving the environment and its people. Creating a face mask is sustainable as it requires pretty little fabric, therefore using up the leftover materials that would have otherwise gone to waste. Many fashion companies are also donating all their proceeds from their sales of these masks to covid-19 relief funds.
The masks are also being used for self-expression and promotion. Industries are using them to their full advantage by promoting their brands by printing their logos, brand elements on the face masks and having their employees wear them, thereby having people notice. Although this accessory trend has pros and is pretty cute, I hope it's not here to stay.
